MANILA, Philippines — The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island has resulted in significant losses for the agriculture sector, totaling PHP 32.34 million.
This event, which occurred earlier in the month, affected various agricultural products and the livelihoods of numerous farmers in the region.
According to a report by the Department of Agriculture (DA), crops such as rice, corn, and high-value vegetables, along with livestock, have been severely impacted.
The DA’s recent bulletin highlighted the extent of the destruction caused by the volcanic activity.
The eruption affected around 780 farmers who depend on the cultivation of these crops and livestock for their incomes.
The total damage includes 832 metric tons of locally produced agricultural goods. The implications of these losses are significant, affecting the food supply chain and the economic stability of those involved in the agricultural sector on Negros Island.
