Prosecutors have charged Luigi Mangione with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, labeling it as an act of terrorism.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, was initially charged with murder following the event on December 4, but this new indictment could expedite procedural steps for his extradition.

Prosecutors argue that the act was motivated by terrorist intent, though details of the motive remain unclear within public records.

Mangione is currently resisting extradition to New York, where the alleged crime took place.

A hearing in Pennsylvania is set to address this matter. The defense team, led by a well-known New York attorney, is challenging the extradition on undisclosed legal grounds.

Thompson, who led UnitedHealthcare, a major player in the health insurance industry, was reportedly in New York on business when the incident occurred.
