MANILA, Philippines –Lawmakers from the Makabayan bloc have formally requested clemency for Mary Jane Veloso, an overseas Filipino worker who has been on death row in Indonesia for 14 years.

The group filed House Resolution No. 2128 in the Philippine House of Representatives. They asked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to consider clemency for Veloso, asserting that she is a “victim of her circumstances.”

Veloso was arrested in 2010 at Yogyakarta Airport, Indonesia, after authorities found heroin in her luggage.

She was convicted on drug trafficking charges and sentenced to death in 2010.

Veloso maintains her innocence, claiming that she was unaware of the drugs in her possession and was deceived by a human trafficking syndicate.
