SAN ANTONIO, Texas –The City Council, in a unanimous decision, has passed a new ordinance aimed at reducing dog-related incidents.
The ordinance is designed to hold dog owners more accountable, particularly those whose pets escape and bite others.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg said that the ordinance has been crafted to ensure that dog owners take necessary precautions to prevent their pets from roaming freely and causing harm.
The mayor also acknowledged the role of responsible pet ownership in ensuring the safety of both residents and animals in the city.
Under the new rules, dog owners are required to implement stronger control measures to prevent their pets from escaping. This includes securing properties with adequate fencing and ensuring that pets are properly leashed in public areas. Failure to adhere to these regulations could result in significant penalties, including fines and mandatory safety training sessions for the owners.
Councilman Manny Pelaez, a vocal advocate for the ordinance, highlighted the impact of dog attacks on the community.
He pointed out that such incidents often result in physical injuries and emotional distress for victims.
The councilman expressed confidence that the new rules will reduce the occurrence of these unfortunate events.
The City Council plans to review the impact of the ordinance regularly as they aim to ensure that it effectively addresses the issues without causing unintended consequences.
