A former coach and teacher at A.C. New Middle School in the Mesquite Independent School District has been arrested on allegations of child grooming. Sergio Gonzalez, who was employed by the district since 2004, faces a third-degree felony charge. The Balch Springs Police Department confirmed the arrest after an investigation revealed an alleged inappropriate relationship between Gonzalez and a student.
The incident came to light when Mesquite ISD officials reported concerns about Gonzalez’s conduct to the police. Upon receiving this information, the police launched an investigation in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Forney Police Department. Following the inquiry, Gonzalez was apprehended at his residence on Wednesday and is currently held at the Balch Springs City jail. Plans are underway for his transfer to the Dallas County jail where he will await further legal proceedings.
Mesquite ISD officials have responded to the incident by placing Gonzalez on leave upon receiving the allegations. Shortly after being placed on leave, Gonzalez resigned from his position. The school district expressed its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all students. In a statement, they declared that any deviation from this principle is unacceptable, emphasizing their resolve to address such issues promptly and effectively.
The charge against Gonzalez, classified as child grooming, is a serious offense in Texas, carrying severe penalties if convicted. The legal definition of child grooming involves establishing a relationship with a child to facilitate abuse or exploitation. It remains uncertain whether any additional charges may arise as the investigation progresses.
This arrest has raised awareness among parents and residents within the Mesquite community regarding the safety and supervision of children in school environments. The incident has prompted conversations about the measures in place to protect students and the responsibilities of educational institutions in safeguarding young people. Parents are urged to engage in open dialogues with their children about personal safety and to report any suspicious activities to authorities.
Local authorities have stated that the investigation remains open, encouraging anyone with additional information related to this case, or any similar cases, to come forward. They have assured the public that all tips will be handled confidentially.
As the judicial process moves forward, Gonzalez will be represented in court, where the charges against him will be evaluated and adjudicated. The case is expected to unfold in the coming weeks, with legal proceedings shedding more light on the evidence gathered by law enforcement.
