MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that airport maintenance concessionaires at Laguindingan International Airport (LAI) in Misamis Oriental must prioritize infrastructure enhancements. DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista emphasized that these improvements are essential before any potential increase in passenger fees.
During a press briefing held in Malacañang on Monday, Bautista discussed the necessity of upgrading the airport facilities. He noted that while discussions about raising fees for airport services are on the table, these fee adjustments will only be considered once the required upgrades are completed.
Bautista stated that the concessionaires have a responsibility to enhance the airport’s infrastructure, including runways, terminals, and other essential facilities. He indicated that passenger safety, comfort, and convenience should be the foremost priorities in these upgrades. The department plans to closely monitor the progress of these infrastructure projects and ensure that necessary improvements are carried out effectively.
In light of passenger concerns about potential fare increases, Bautista reassured the public that any changes would follow significant improvements to the airport’s facilities. The DOTr aims to maintain open communication with the public and stakeholders regarding any upcoming alterations in service fees.
The necessary upgrades at LAI include a range of projects focused on improving overall airport operations, passenger experience, and safety. Bautista highlighted that modernizing the airport facilities will ultimately benefit both travelers and the airport’s operational capacity.
The call for upgrades reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of service in the aviation sector amidst rising passenger demands. Bautista’s statement comes as the government promotes a more efficient and responsive airport infrastructure.
