MANILA, Philippines — A budget allocation of P10 million for a children’s book authored by Vice President Sara Duterte has raised questions during a Senate hearing. This funding is included in the proposed 2025 budget for the Vice President’s office. Senator Risa Hontiveros expressed concerns regarding the appropriateness of such an allocation.

During the Senate budget hearing held on Tuesday, Senator Hontiveros challenged the reasoning behind the funding. She highlighted that the amount is significant, and questioned the decision to allocate public funds for a personal project of the Vice President. Hontiveros asked how this funding would benefit the public and if there are more pressing needs that should take precedence over this project.

Duterte defended the allocation, stating that the children’s book aims to promote education and literacy among young Filipinos. She argued that literature can play an essential role in engaging children and instilling values in the youth. According to her, the book aligns with the government’s objective of enhancing educational materials for children.

The Vice President emphasized her commitment to improving literacy rates and fostering a love for reading among children. She pointed out that the book will focus on themes relevant to Philippine culture and history, helping to instill national pride. Duterte stated that the initiative could serve as a valuable educational resource for schools and families.

Despite these justifications, Senator Hontiveros remained critical of the funding. She reiterated the need for accountability in the use of public funds. Hontiveros expressed concerns that such expenditures should be thoroughly examined to ensure they benefit all citizens effectively.

The exchange between Duterte and Hontiveros highlights ongoing debates in the Senate regarding budget priorities. Questions of transparency and the use of taxpayer money continue to be at the forefront as lawmakers review the proposed budget.
