LOS ANGELES — Five people face charges related to the death of actor Matthew Perry, who died from a ketamine overdose last year. Those charged include Perry’s assistant and two doctors.

U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada announced the charges during a news conference on Thursday. He stated that the defendants exploited Perry’s struggles with addiction for personal gain. Estrada emphasized that the accused knew their actions were unethical and harmful.

The investigation into Perry’s death revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for addiction issues before his passing. Authorities allege that the individuals charged played a role in facilitating the access to drugs that contributed to his overdose. The charges reflect a broader concern about the responsibilities of professionals in the medical field when it comes to patients struggling with addiction.

Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing on the television show ”Friends,” had a long public battle with substance abuse. He was open about his experiences and sought help on multiple occasions. He worked to raise awareness about addiction and the importance of treatment. His death shocked fans and friends alike, sparking conversations about mental health and addiction in Hollywood.

The five individuals charged are accused of various offenses, including conspiracy and distribution of a controlled substance. The specifics of each charge differ based on the individual’s alleged involvement in Perry’s care. Estrada stated that the legal actions are part of an effort to hold those who take advantage of vulnerable individuals accountable.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the defendants or their specific roles in the case. The investigation is ongoing, and more information may emerge as it proceeds through the legal system.
