A 16-year-old boy in Deer Park was critically injured while defending his mother from a carjacker, with the suspect now in custody following a dramatic chase that ended in a crash.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 8000 block of Spencer Highway. According to Houston police, the victim’s mother was leaving work when a suspect attempted to carjack her. The teen intervened to protect his mother, but was shot in the chest by the suspect.

He was airlifted to a hospital by Life Flight and is currently in critical condition.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. Law enforcement quickly broadcast information about the car, leading Harris County Precinct 8 constable deputies and Houston police to initiate a pursuit. During the chase, the suspect drove the wrong way on the highway, causing authorities to temporarily lose track of him.

The vehicle was later located on I-610, and the pursuit resumed. The chase ended in the 5800 block of Creekbend when the suspect crashed into two parked vehicles in a residential driveway, pushing one into a garage. The suspect was arrested at the scene and reportedly uninjured.

Police are preparing to forward the case to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges.
