Houston is mourning the loss of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a revered figure whose influence extended far beyond her political career. Friends, colleagues, and community members reflect on the legacy she leaves behind, from her early days in politics to her impactful tenure as a congresswoman.
“She was ubiquitous in being everywhere and trying to serve everywhere she could,” said Sonceria Messiah-Jiles, CEO of the Houston Defender Network. After losing one of her first races, Jackson Lee’s resilience and determination shone through as she continued to fight for justice and community welfare.
“Whether it was criminal justice, for women, or children, she was there for the community. You could never say she wasn’t going to show up for you,” Messiah-Jiles added.
Messiah-Jiles recalls her first encounter with Jackson Lee, not in a political setting but at her mother’s house over a bowl of gumbo. “It was more girl talk and advice on how to navigate the political arena and key players…At the end of her career, she was one of the kingmakers,” she said.
For many, the opportunity to hear Jackson Lee speak was a privilege. Tyrone Lane, a pastor at Fresh Impact Church in Pearland, praised her strong-willed nature and positive influence. “Just to interact with her, she’s been a strong influencer, her characteristics show she’s strong-minded, strong-willed about the positive things,” Lane said.
Former Texas Southern University president Dr. James Douglas highlighted Jackson Lee’s significant contributions to higher education. He reminisced about their joint efforts to secure funding for Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University. “Texas Southern and Prairie View got about 25 million from the state legislature. At the time we started that effort with the DOE I was [TSU] president, Sheila and I worked together,” Dr. Douglas shared.
Jackson Lee’s impact extended beyond her professional achievements. Messiah-Jiles fondly remembered her as a grandmother, while Pastor Lane empathized with her family, recalling his own mother’s battle with cancer. “She has definitely been an icon and a pioneer for this community,” Lane said.
As Houston reflects on Sheila Jackson Lee’s life and legacy, it is clear that her contributions and dedication have left an indelible mark on the city and its residents.
