Baytown, Texas — Lydia Monique Aviles, 28, has been charged with two counts of abandoning a child with intent to return after leaving two children under the age of 15 inside a locked vehicle on a hot day without adequate air conditioning.

According to court documents, Aviles left the children in the car for approximately an hour while she was inside a salon getting her nails done. Baytown Police reported that although the car was running, the air conditioning was not strong enough to cool the entire vehicle.

“Upon arrival, officers observed the children, one in a car seat and the other moving around inside the vehicle. Although the air conditioning was on, it was not strong enough to cool down the entire vehicle,” the department stated.

KPRC 2 Reporter Corley Peel spoke with a salon employee who wished to remain anonymous. The employee described the salon’s atmosphere and Aviles’ sudden departure when police arrived. “She was just a walk-in, and we just did the color very quick on her toes and did a refill. Suddenly, the police opened the door and called her name, and she immediately went outside,” the employee recounted.

Aviles has since been released from jail after posting a $20,000 bond, according to court records.
