A Taiwanese court on Monday sentenced ten individuals, including a Chinese yo-yo coach, for espionage activities on behalf of China as part of efforts to counter Beijing’s influence on the island.

The court identified Lu Chi-hsien as the ringleader, who was recruited during a visit to China to establish an espionage network and gather intelligence.

Lu was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison while the other nine received prison terms ranging from 3 to 6 years.

The charges included violations of the National Security Act and illegal currency exchange.
