Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 3070 into law on Sunday, initiating the dissolution of the Texas Lottery Commission and placing new restrictions on how lottery tickets may be sold in the state.

Under the law, the Texas Lottery Commission will be disbanded, and oversight of the lottery will be transferred to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The state lottery will continue operating under the new framework until at least 2029.

Investigations into online couriers and prior jackpot claims were cited as contributing factors in the legislative push.

Lawmakers have said the new restrictions are intended to safeguard against potential abuses and restore transparency to the lottery system.
