Archeology project reconnects Tonkawa Tribe with ancestral Texas

AUSTIN, Texas– An ongoing archaeological excavation in Milam County, Texas, is aiding the Tonkawa Tribe in rediscovering and preserving its historical roots.

The dig is taking place at Red Mountain, a sacred peak that the Tonkawa Tribe purchased in 2023.

The tribe is working on transforming Red Mountain into a park, enhancing its historical significance.

Artifacts uncovered during the dig suggest that Red Mountain was once a community site.

The Texas Archeological Society is collaborating with the Tonkawa Tribe in this archaeological endeavor.

Plans are underway to reintroduce the endangered Houston Toad to the Red Mountain area.

The discovery of the artifacts will contribute to the conservation and cultural heritage efforts by the Tonkawa Tribe.
