New Zealand approved the medicinal use of psilocybin on Wednesday, enabling its prescription for certain depression types.
Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour announced the relaxation of rules to allow psilocybin’s use in treating specific depression cases.
Psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in some mushroom species, can induce hallucinations and an altered state of mind.
Seymour clarified that while psilocybin remains an unapproved medicine, a psychiatrist with significant experience received authorization to prescribe it to patients with treatment-resistant depression.
