Filipino tennis player Alex Eala advanced to the main draw of the WTA 250 Nottingham Open on Monday, June 5, 2023, after defeating Romania’s Anca Todoni in a three-set qualifying match.
Eala, 20, secured the win with a 6-3, 6(4)-7, 6-3 scoreline in the final round of qualifiers. The match, held at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, marked a key milestone in her professional career.
Trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, Eala initially took control of the match by winning the first set. She appeared on track for a straight-sets victory before Todoni forced a second-set tiebreak, which the Romanian won. Eala responded strongly in the third set, breaking Todoni’s serve to establish a 5-2 lead and closing out the match soon after.
Her qualification into the main draw comes amid a growing list of international appearances and successes. The Nottingham Open, a grass-court tournament and part of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, draws players from across the globe and serves as a preparatory event for Wimbledon.
Eala’s advancement highlights her continued development on the international stage and boosts her world ranking prospects. It also adds to her growing profile as one of the Philippines’ most promising young athletes.
