OpenAI has banned several accounts in the Philippines for using its artificial intelligence tools to generate large volumes of politically charged social media comments, the company confirmed this week.
According to OpenAI, the banned accounts produced automated comments that either supported President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. or criticized Vice President Sara Duterte, his former UniTeam running mate.
The company cited misuse of its AI models as the basis for the action, stating that such activity violated its policies on political manipulation.
“These accounts were found to be using our technology to influence public opinion in a manner inconsistent with our use policies,” an OpenAI spokesperson said. “We are committed to ensuring our tools are used ethically and not for the spread of misinformation or political propaganda.”
The number of accounts affected has not been disclosed. However, OpenAI emphasized that it continues to monitor its platform for violations and will take action to prevent misuse, particularly in politically sensitive contexts.
Authorities in the Philippines have not yet issued a formal response to OpenAI’s move.
