Celine Dion, the iconic Canadian singer celebrated for her powerful voice and global influence, is the focal point of a poignant new documentary shedding light on her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor, “I Am: Celine Dion” explores the personal and profound impact of this rare neurological condition on Dion’s life and career.

SPS, affecting only one or two individuals per million, initiates with muscle spasms that can escalate into debilitating full-body attacks and severe torso rigidity over time. Dion publicly disclosed her diagnosis in 2022, prompting concern and support from her worldwide fanbase. Despite stepping away from the limelight since then, the documentary reveals the ongoing challenges she faces as she grapples with the painful disorder.

Recently screened to the press at Bafta in London, the film captures intimate moments of Dion’s journey, including a particularly gripping scene where she experiences muscle cramps during physiotherapy after attempting to record a song. The documentary portrays her distress as she endures spasms that threaten to escalate into a crisis, illustrating the unpredictable nature of SPS.

In a candid exchange with her physiotherapist captured on camera, Dion articulates her vulnerability and frustration. “Every time something like this happens, it makes you feel so embarrassed and like… I don’t have control of yourself,” she shares, reflecting on the emotional toll of the condition.

Despite the challenges, Dion’s resilience shines through. The documentary captures her determination to continue pursuing her passion for music, even amidst the physical setbacks caused by SPS. “What am I gonna do? Because if I can’t get stimulated by what I love, then am I going to go on stage… you gonna turn me on my back?” she questions, highlighting her unwavering commitment to her artistry.

As the film concludes, Dion finds solace in music once more, singing along to the soulful tune “Who I Am” by Wyn Starks. The moment encapsulates her spirit as she embraces the lyrics, affirming her identity and resolve. “What a song,” she remarks, encapsulating a poignant moment of triumph amidst adversity.

“I Am: Celine Dion” is set to premiere on Prime Video on June 25, offering viewers a heartfelt and candid portrayal of Dion’s journey with SPS, reinforcing her enduring legacy as both an artist and a fighter.
