The Australian War Memorial has removed a display that inaccurately labeled Chinese-style clothing as traditional Korean attire, following complaints from the Korean community.
The correction came after Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University, a prominent advocate for Korean cultural awareness, raised the issue on social media. In an Instagram post dated May 29, Prof. Seo said he had been contacted by several Koreans living in Australia about the mislabeled exhibit.
The museum acknowledged the feedback and took prompt action to address the error, removing the display in question. While the War Memorial has not released an official statement, the decision to remove the mislabeled item was confirmed by Prof. Seo.
He welcomed the correction, emphasizing the importance of accurate cultural representation in public institutions. The incident has reignited discussions on the necessity of precise and respectful labeling in exhibitions that feature cultural artifacts.
