The U.S. Senate confirmed Charles Kushner as the next U.S. ambassador to France on Monday with a 51 to 45 vote.
Kushner, a real estate executive and former attorney, previously served time in federal prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion and other crimes in 2004.
He was pardoned by former President Donald Trump in 2020 near the end of Trump’s first term.
Kushner is the father of Jared Kushner, who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump. Jared Kushner served as a senior advisor to Trump, focusing on Middle East conflict resolution during his first term.
Charles Kushner’s appointment comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen U.S.-France relations. His confirmation represents his first ambassadorial role and highlights the continued influence of the Trump family in political appointments.
While the confirmation process included debate over Kushner’s legal history and his presidential pardon, the Senate voted in favor of his appointment.
As ambassador, Kushner will be tasked with representing U.S. interests and working to foster bilateral ties with France, navigating complex foreign policy challenges.
