AUSTIN, Texas — In a concerted effort to combat crime in areas identified as high-risk, the Austin Police Department’s North Metro Tactical Response Unit, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal Investigations Division, conducted a proactive enforcement operation on May 1 in North Austin. This initiative resulted in the arrest of four individuals and the confiscation of multiple handguns and illegal narcotics.
The operation targeted specific locations within the region known for high rates of violent crime, narcotics activity, and other community concerns. One such hotspot was the area surrounding Thurmond Street and North Lamar Boulevard, particularly the Thurmond Heights apartment complex operated by the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA).
During the operation, officers observed individuals engaging in drug-related activities. Subsequent investigations led to the identification and arrest of four suspects on various charges. The individuals arrested include:
- Neshea Harper, 30, charged with possession of a controlled substance (Penalty Group 1 Crack Cocaine, F2) and obstructing highway passage (Class B Misdemeanor).
- Chaz Young, 39, charged with delivery of a controlled substance (Penalty Group 1 Crack Cocaine, F1), unlawful carrying of a weapon (F2 for possessing a stolen revolver), and evading detention or arrest with prior conviction (State Jail Felony).
- Edwin Middleton, 34, charged with possession of a controlled substance (Penalty Group 1 Crack Cocaine, F3) and felon in possession of a firearm (F3).
- Kevin Abraham, 30, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (F2).
In addition to the arrests, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Neshea Harper’s apartment, where they recovered five handguns, approximately 1.5 ounces of crack cocaine, and various quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Authorities have indicated that further charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
