MANILA, Philippines —Filipino tennis player Alex Eala will make her debut in the Grand Slam main draw at the 2023 French Open, scheduled from May 25 to June 8.

This milestone comes after her rise to No. 73 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings, up from her previous career-high of No. 134.

Eala’s ranking surge was largely fueled by her strong performance at the Miami Open, where she reached the semifinals and defeated several higher-ranked opponents. This breakthrough result was pivotal in securing her spot in the French Open’s main draw.

The 17-year-old, who made history by winning the junior singles title at the 2022 U.S. Open, has been training at the Rafa Nadal Academy, a key factor in her development as a player.

Eala’s entry into the top 100 further cements her as one of tennis’ most promising young talents.

Her appearance at Roland Garros will test her against the world’s best players, providing her valuable experience and a chance to continue her upward trajectory in the rankings.

Eala’s rise in the rankings and her Grand Slam debut are seen as major achievements in her career, signaling a bright future for the young athlete and inspiring aspiring tennis players, especially in the Philippines.
