MANILA, Philippines– The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines warned airlines on Monday about possible sanctions for the deliberate tampering of passengers’ passports.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon issued the caution following reports of “punit passport” incidents, where passports were allegedly torn intentionally at some airports in the country.
These incidents have reportedly led to the offloading of affected passengers. Secretary Dizon held a meeting with airline representatives over the weekend to discuss the issue, emphasizing that any such scheme, if confirmed, will not be tolerated.
Dizon stated that investigations will involve reviewing CCTV footage and examining firsthand accounts to verify the claims of passport tampering. The DOTr is taking the reports seriously and aims to ensure the protection of passengers’ rights.
