PYONGYANG, North Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered an accelerated effort to equip naval vessels with nuclear weapons, according to a report released Wednesday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The directive followed Kim’s inspection of a weapons test involving the country’s latest destroyer, the Choe Hyon.

During the test, Kim emphasized the strategic importance of nuclear armament in protecting North Korea’s maritime sovereignty and responding to what he described as current and future threats.

KCNA reported that Kim outlined specific tasks aimed at implementing the nuclear naval strategy, though further details were not disclosed.

The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions and continued international concerns over North Korea’s weapons development programs.
