Pope Francis’ coffin begins journey to St. Mary Major Basilica

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis’ coffin departed the Vatican on Saturday in a white popemobile after his funeral at St. Peter’s Square.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Rome to witness the procession of the coffin to its final resting place at Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica.

Pope Francis passed away from a stroke and heart failure less than a month after being discharged from the hospital.

He had spent five weeks in the hospital battling pneumonia.

Pope Francis was known for enjoying interactions with his followers, often taking selfies and kissing babies.
