HOUSTON, Texas–Houston Congressman Al Green has condemned federal reductions in food assistance programs for seniors, which occurred in March 2023.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture cut $1 billion from these programs, including $660 million earmarked for school food initiatives and $420 million that aided food banks and local community organizations.
Congressman Green expressed his concerns regarding the impact on seniors, as more than 15,000 seniors in his district rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
These cuts come as food banks across the country face increased demand and reduced resources to distribute food, heightening food insecurity risks.
