MANILA, Philippines– Akbayan Partylist called on political candidates in the Philippines to abandon misogynistic tactics on Wednesday, arguing that such behavior will no longer secure electoral victory.
Akbayan Partylist Representative Perci Cendaña emphasized the end of the era where disrespectful conduct leads to success, alluding to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s detention at the International Criminal Court.
Cendaña highlighted the real consequences of sexist remarks and called for respect and dignity in elections.
The statement followed recent incidents where several candidates faced criticism from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for making distasteful remarks.
Comelec has issued show cause orders to these candidates, underscoring the importance of maintaining respectful discourse during election campaigns.
The call for change aims to ensure that elections reflect the values of respect and dignity, moving away from derogatory tactics.
