After living in the U.S. until junior high, Joyce returned to the Philippines to finish high school.
“Going back to the Philippines allowed me to reconnect with my roots in a way many other teens don’t get to experience,” Joyce reflects. This opportunity helped her rediscover her heritage in a deeper, more personal way.
Living in Manila, Joyce immersed herself fully in Filipino life—taking public transportation, staying in a dorm, and playing basketball at the University of the Philippines.
“I wasn’t rich, but those were invaluable lessons in independence and resilience,” Joyce recalls.

The Move to the U.S.: A New Beginning
The early years in the U.S. were full of obstacles, yet they played a vital role in Joyce’s growth. When her parents divorced, Joyce’s father, who was in the U.S., decided to send her to live with her mother.
At first, she didn’t plan on staying in the U.S. permanently. “When my dad asked if I wanted him to petition me for citizenship, I turned it down,” Joyce admits. Despite her initial reservations, she soon discovered that this decision would lead to new opportunities and success.
Joyce’s career began as a flight attendant for Saudi Arabian Airlines, where she was exposed to different cultures and learned valuable lessons in communication, adaptability, and problem-solving.
“The airline industry taught me how to work under pressure, how to communicate with people from all walks of life, and how to develop thick skin, especially in dealing with Middle Eastern culture,” Joyce says.
Over time, she was promoted, and eventually based in New York City, where her life would take another turn—she met her future husband. Their love story began in one of Manhattan’s largest clubs, and 25 years later, they are still going strong. “We’re celebrating 25 years of marriage this May,” Joyce says, her voice filled with warmth.
Shifting Careers: Building a Legacy in Financial Services
In 1999, Joyce decided to leave the airline industry and pivot into a corporate career. After working at a hotel in Manhattan, she transitioned into another company before discovering her true calling in the financial services industry. Nearly eight years ago, Joyce took the leap and founded Legacy Ensured Group, a life insurance and financial services business. Through this venture, she has dedicated herself to helping families secure their futures and protect their financial legacies.
The name of her company, “Legacy Ensured,” reflects Joyce’s passion for ensuring that families can protect their financial futures. “It’s not just about financial planning,” Joyce explains.
“It’s about offering peace of mind and the reassurance that families will be okay no matter what happens.” Helping clients pay off debt, plan for the future, and create lasting legacies has brought Joyce immense satisfaction.
“The greatest reward for me is knowing that I’m providing families with the security to build their futures,” she adds.
A Commitment to Family, Culture, and Community
Throughout her career, Joyce has remained firmly connected to her Filipino heritage. She credits social media with helping her stay in touch with her family in the Philippines.
“My daughter knows her relatives back home, and we make it a priority to travel to the Philippines so she can experience her roots first-hand,” Joyce shares. Her commitment to maintaining cultural ties is a cornerstone of her identity.
In Austin, Texas, where she now lives, Joyce is a prominent figure in the Filipino-American community. As the region chair for the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce, she plays a key role in supporting Filipino-American business owners and professionals.
“Many people in Austin don’t know we have a Filipino-American chamber, so our goal is to raise awareness and help those who could benefit from it,” Joyce explains.
But her work goes beyond business; it’s about fostering connections and creating a space where Filipino culture continues to thrive. “It’s important for my daughter and the younger generation to understand the importance of our heritage,” Joyce adds.
In addition to her work with the Chamber, Joyce is also involved in serving the homeless through her church’s nonprofit organization. Once a month, she volunteers to provide food and assistance to those in need in Austin.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s important to me to maintain this service,” Joyce says, demonstrating her commitment to giving back to the community. She is also working to get the Chamber more involved in addressing homelessness in the area, underscoring her desire to create lasting, positive change in the community.

Despite her growing focus on self-improvement, Joyce remains committed to her work with nonprofits and continues to advocate for causes close to her heart, particularly homelessness. She is determined to keep her involvement in these efforts strong and impactful.

When asked what advice she would offer to the younger generation eager to make a difference, Joyce’s message is clear: “Keep going, even when you face setbacks. Life is full of bumps in the road, but those are where you learn the most. Stay true to your passions and be authentic.”
