THE HAGUE, Netherlands–The International Criminal Court (ICC) has scheduled the confirmation of charges hearing for former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for Sept. 23.
The hearing will address allegations of crimes against humanity related to his controversial anti-drug crackdown during his presidency.
The announcement came during a pretrial session at The Hague, where Judge Iulia Antoanella Motoc presided. Duterte participated via video link.
The charges against Duterte stem from his administration’s aggressive anti-drug campaign, which has been criticized internationally for human rights violations and alleged extrajudicial killings.
The ICC’s involvement centers on determining whether these actions during Duterte’s presidency could be classified as crimes against humanity.
Judge Motoc clarified that Duterte has the opportunity to contest the charges during the confirmation hearing.
