Authorities are investigating the deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, after their bodies were discovered at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Hackman, 95, is believed to have died over a week before their discovery on February 26, 2025. The couple, along with one of their pet dogs, was found in separate areas of their residence.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza reported that Hackman’s pacemaker recorded its last data on February 17, prompting authorities to believe that his death occurred around that time.
The sheriff’s office has ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning following initial inquiries. Autopsies revealed no signs of forced entry or external trauma, suggesting that there were no immediate signs of foul play.
Hackman, known for his iconic roles in films such as “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven,” retired from acting in 2004 to focus on writing and painting.
His wife, Betsy Arakawa, a classical pianist, was also known for her artistic work. The couple lived a quiet, reclusive life in Santa Fe, surrounded by art and nature.
Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to provide further details about the circumstances surrounding their deaths. It has been confirmed that neither Hackman nor Arakawa showed signs of carbon monoxide exposure.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office continues to explore all leads and consult with experts as they await final autopsy results.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the beloved actor and his wife.
