HOUSTON, Texas– Harris County officials have requested the creation of five additional civil district courts to address case backlogs and accommodate the county’s growing population.

The county’s current judicial resources are being stretched due to the increase in cases, prompting local judges to advocate for the expansion of the court system.

County officials have emphasized that the current infrastructure is insufficient, potentially delaying justice for residents who rely on timely legal proceedings.

However, details regarding the proposed locations for the new courts have not been provided, leaving questions about how the expansion would address the needs of different areas within the county.

Additionally, the financial implications of the plan, including the costs for staffing, maintenance, and infrastructure, remain unclear.

Texas law grants the authority to create new courts solely to state lawmakers.

Therefore, Harris County must seek approval from the state legislature to move forward with the proposal.
