The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has issued a warning about an increase in fraudulent text messages targeting TxTag toll customers.

The messages falsely claim that recipients have overdue toll balances, prompting immediate attention from drivers and authorities.

Reports indicate that these unsolicited texts are part of a broader phishing scam targeting Texas residents.

Scammers are attempting to extract personal and financial information through messages that appear to be legitimate.

TxDOT has urged the public to remain cautious and discerning when receiving such communications.

TxDOT clarified that it does not send text messages regarding toll payment reminders, including those about overdue balances.

The department emphasized that any messages claiming to require toll payments should be considered fraudulent.

TxDOT has encouraged anyone who receives suspicious messages to contact their Customer Service for verification.

The agency has provided contact information for its support team, urging customers to confirm any questionable claims before taking action.

Additionally, TxDOT advises individuals who suspect they have been targeted by these scams to file complaints with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Law enforcement agencies are investigating these phishing attempts and working to track down the scammers.
