Basketball legend Dwyane Wade, 43, disclosed that a cancer diagnosis led to the removal of 40% of one of his kidneys.
Wade shared the news during an episode of his podcast, The Why with Dwyane Wade, revealing how his health journey unfolded.
Wade explained that although he had not been regularly visiting doctors after retiring from professional basketball, he began experiencing stomach and urinary issues that prompted him to seek medical attention.
Wade’s decision to see a doctor was also influenced by his father’s battle with prostate cancer, motivating him to take preventive health measures seriously.
After undergoing a full-body scan, doctors discovered an anomaly on his right kidney. Further tests led to the recommendation of surgery, which took place on December 18, 2023.
During the procedure, doctors removed a cancerous tumor along with a significant portion of his kidney. Subsequent analysis confirmed the malignancy of the tumor.
Wade described the experience as a transformative moment, saying it was the first time his strength and resilience were visibly tested.
He noted that his family saw a more vulnerable side of him during his recovery, describing the time as one of the weakest he had ever felt.
Despite the emotional and physical challenges, Wade emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly for men.
He urged others to prioritize their health and address any concerns, highlighting how his own experience has led him to commit to living a more proactive and fulfilling life.
Throughout his career, Wade established himself as one of basketball’s greats, winning three NBA championships with the Miami Heat and earning 13 All-Star selections.
Since retiring, Wade has remained involved in the sports world, including as part of the Chicago Sky’s ownership group, while also promoting health and wellness.
