The City of Dallas has launched a nationwide search for a new leader to head its police department following the departure of former Police Chief Eddie Garcia.
Michael Igo, who has served as interim police chief since October 2024, is currently managing the department’s operations.
Igo has been overseeing the department’s operations and ensuring continuity in policing duties since taking over.
City officials have outlined several key criteria for the next police chief. The ideal candidate must possess strong leadership abilities, a commitment to engaging with the community, and the capability to build trust between the police and Dallas’s diverse populations.
The search committee is also looking for someone with innovative law enforcement strategies and a proven history of managing complex urban policing challenges.
With a population of over 1.3 million, Dallas faces challenges such as addressing crime rates, ensuring public safety, and maintaining positive community relations.
The new chief will need to implement strategies that balance public trust with effective resource management.
