Sixties legend Marianne Faithfull dies at 78

British singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has passed away at the age of 78.

Her death was confirmed by a spokesperson on Thursday in London.

Faithfull was best known for her hit song “As Tears Go By,” in 1964 after being discovered by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham.

Born in Hampstead, London, Faithfull came from an artistic background. Her father was a British Army officer, and her mother was a ballerina.

Her first single, “As Tears Go By,” written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Oldham, quickly became a chart-topping success.

Faithfull’s unique voice and emotive delivery made a lasting impression, cementing her place as a prominent artist in the 1960s.

Over the course of her career, Faithfull faced personal challenges, including struggles with drug addiction.

In addition to her music, Faithfull also pursued acting, appearing in films and stage productions. One of her most notable stage performances was in the 1969 production of “Hamlet,” where she portrayed Ophelia.

Faithfull’s life was marked by high-profile relationships, including a well-known romance with Mick Jagger during the 1960s.

Throughout her career, Faithfull released several albums, including the critically acclaimed “Broken English” in 1979.

This album was seen as a powerful comeback, offering a raw, honest exploration of personal themes and showcasing a new vocal style that resonated with audiences.

Her autobiography, Faithfull, provides a detailed account of her journey, including her rise to fame, struggles with addiction, and eventual recovery.
