There are some individuals whose impact can be felt in more than one sphere of society. Gene Carangal is one such individual—a professional who has seamlessly integrated his diverse passions and expertise into a life that truly exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose.

From his impressive career in healthcare technology and software development to his role as a real estate investor and cultural advocate, Gene’s story offers a powerful reminder of how dedication, risk-taking, and staying connected to one’s roots can shape both professional success and personal fulfillment.

Navigating a Career Across Tech, Healthcare, and Real Estate

Gene’s professional journey began in tech. After earning a degree in Math and Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago, he worked as an applications programmer for a marketing research company. His role quickly grew into managing software development projects, leading teams to build solutions on mainframe, Unix, and desktop systems. But Gene’s story took a big turn in 2002 when he and his wife decided to open a pediatric clinic in McAllen, Texas.

In his new role as the clinic’s practice administrator, Gene was in charge of everything from ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations to transitioning the clinic from paper charts to a cutting-edge Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. This experience not only deepened his expertise in healthcare but also taught him how to manage and adapt to complex challenges.

In 2013, Gene returned to his tech roots by joining software startups focused on medical SaaS (Software as a Service) solutions. He coached teams on Agile principles and test-driven development, leading a successful project integrating cloud systems with athenahealth, a leader in EMR software. Today, Gene works at USAA as a digital product owner, managing two major enterprise software applications.

From Software to Real Estate Ventures

Gene’s influence extends far beyond the realms of technology and healthcare. He is also a thriving real estate investor with a diverse portfolio of residential and commercial properties in the Rio Grande Valley. His entrepreneurial spirit shines through his real estate venture, Laguna Property Management, LLC, based in San Antonio, where he oversees all operations and client communication outside of his day job. Gene’s ability to diversify his professional interests and apply his management skills to real estate further demonstrates his versatility as an entrepreneur.

Championing Filipino Culture Through the Adobo Throwdown

Gene’s connection to his Filipino roots has also been an integral part of his life’s work, particularly through his role as the event promoter for the Adobo Throwdown Cooking Competition and Food Expo. This annual event, which showcases the rich culture of the Philippines, celebrates Filipino food, music, and dance, offering a platform to raise awareness and appreciation for Filipino culinary traditions. Gene’s passion for Filipino food is palpable. His dedication to promoting Filipino cuisine in innovative ways has made a lasting impact on the culinary scene, particularly in the U.S.

As an advocate for Filipino culture, Gene believes that food is one of the most powerful ways to connect people to a heritage that transcends borders.

“I’ve always believed that Filipino food is underrated. It has so much to offer, but it hasn’t received the attention it deserves,” Gene explains.

Through the Adobo Throwdown, he has successfully blended his love for food and his entrepreneurial spirit to create an event that celebrates Filipino culture and fosters a sense of pride in the community.

Leadership Beyond Work: PACCTX Greater San Antonio

In addition to his professional endeavors, Gene is also deeply committed to giving back to the community. As the region chair of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Texas (PACCTX)-Greater San Antonio, Gene plays a vital role in promoting Filipino-American interests and initiatives in the region. Through his leadership, he helps empower Filipino entrepreneurs, advocates for community support and strengthens cultural ties within the greater San Antonio area.

Staying Motivated and Moving Forward

Gene’s commitment to both his professional endeavors and his community work can be traced back to his unwavering passion.

“You have to love what you do,” he says. “When you’re passionate about something, it becomes easier to push through the setbacks and obstacles.”

It is this same passion that has fueled his perseverance through various transitions in his career—from software development to healthcare, and then to real estate investment.

“My journey has taught me that it’s important to take risks and try new things,” Gene adds. “Failure is just part of the process, and every setback is a chance to learn and grow.”

As someone who has succeeded in several fields, Gene’s perspective on what it takes to be an effective mover or influencer is clear: “You cannot be afraid to fail. You need to love what you do, take risks, and stay true to yourself. Being authentic and embracing your culture will always guide you in the right direction.”

Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation

For the younger generation looking to carve out their own path, Gene offers words of wisdom. “Be proud of who you are and where you come from,” he advises.

“Your culture is a part of you, and it’s something that should never be hidden. Embrace it, and always be true to yourself. Success comes when you find your passion and stay committed to it.”

Gene’s story serves as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of multiple passions, along with a strong sense of identity and community, can lead to fulfillment and success. From software development to real estate, and from healthcare to Filipino cultural advocacy, Gene’s journey is a testament to the boundless potential of those who choose to follow their hearts, take risks, and impact the world in meaningful ways.

And that’s what being a true mover, shaker, and influencer is all about. Gene’s multifaceted journey will continue to inspire future generations to dream big and reach further, regardless of where their roots may lie.
