HOUSTON, Texas – The city hosted its first-ever Lunar New Year Celebration on Jan. 17 at City Hall.
Organized by the Office of the City Controller’s Community Engagement Department and led by Joanne Ray, the event was supported by over 60 community organizations.
The celebration featured traditional performances, including lion dances, as well as local food and crafts. Various cultural groups, including Chinese-American and Filipino communities, participated in the event.
Joanne Ray, head of the Community Engagement Department, explained that the goal of the event was to provide an opportunity for Houstonians to experience and appreciate the diverse cultures that make up the city.
She expressed her happiness that the event allowed people to come together, celebrate, and have an enjoyable time.
“Not many of them will go to Chinatown or Asiantown for our event so my vision is to bring that event to the downtown,” Ray said.
The event also honored senior community members in a special ceremony. The success of the celebration reflects Houston’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and cultural awareness.
Chris Hollins, a native Houstonian who became City Controller in January 2024, also played a role in the celebration.
As the city’s Chief Financial Officer, Hollins oversees a budget exceeding $6 billion, a $6 billion investment portfolio, and a $14 billion debt portfolio. He is known for his commitment to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and improving city services through innovative practices.
Prior to his role as City Controller, Hollins gained national recognition for his leadership as Harris County Clerk during the 2020 elections, where he expanded voting access and introduced measures like drive-thru and 24-hour voting. Hollins holds degrees from Morehouse College, Yale Law School, and Harvard Business School.
The event’s success highlights Houston’s ongoing commitment to celebrating its diverse cultural communities and fostering an inclusive environment for all.
