MANILA, Philippines– Lea Salonga has been announced as The Witch in the Philippine staging of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

The musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1987, intertwines classic fairy tales and explores themes such as ambition, loss, and the consequences of wishes.

The role of The Witch, a pivotal character in the narrative, was famously portrayed by Meryl Streep in the 2014 film adaptation, earning her an Academy Award nomination.

Salonga, a Tony Award-winning performer known for her roles in Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, as well as her work as the singing voice of Disney characters Jasmine and Mulan, brings significant star power to the production.

The Philippine production is led by a creative team committed to maintaining the integrity of Sondheim’s original work while introducing local elements.

It aims to deliver a compelling rendition of the musical for both Filipino audiences and theater enthusiasts.

Tickets are expected to go on sale soon, with details about the full cast and production schedule to be announced in the coming months.
